The island offers amenities including a 24-hour police force and an 18-hole golf course, according to the listing. Inside, a crystal chandelier dangles from 26-foot domed ceilings over a Cinderella staircase. The foyer leads to entertaining areas, a screening room, a wood-paneled office, a gym and a primary bedroom suite with two full bathrooms, according to the listing. "In 1985, Donald J. Trump purchased the property from the Post Foundation and used the estate as a private residence until 1995." Trump owned a five-bedroom mansion on North Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, California from 2007 to 2019.
In 1985, Donald Trump purchased the property for $10 million including some of the original furnishings. Post died in 1973, and her will gifted the ocean-to-lake estate to the U.S. government for use as a winter White House. But the cost of maintenance was too expensive so the government deeded it back to the family. When cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post built the 17 acre estate Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida in 1924, she envisioned the property as a future retreat for U.S. presidents. (Barron, his 14-year-old son, reportedly has a floor all to himself.) His offices were also in the building, so living and working at the same address was not new to him when he moved into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The White House decor might be a bit subdued though, since the penthouse was modeled after the Palace of Versailles, with rococo decor and a profuse amount of gold.

As per Forbes, the former president paid "$5 million for the massive home, a reported $3 million for its lavish furnishings, plus another $2 million for 400 feet of prime beachfront directly across the street." Trump filed a third suit against the county in January 2015, seeking $100 million in damages for "creating an unreasonable amount of noise, emissions and pollutants at Mar-a-Lago". Trump claims that officials pressured the FAA to direct air traffic to PBI over Mar-a-Lago in a "deliberate and malicious" act. Trump has repeatedly filed lawsuits against Palm Beach County over aircraft going to and from Palm Beach International Airport allegedly affecting Mar-a-Lago.
The club had revenues of $25.1 million for calendar year 2017, $22 million in 2018, and $21.4 million in 2019. Mar-a-Lago means "sea-to-lake" in Spanish, referring to the fact that the resort extends the entire width of Palm Beach, from the Atlantic Ocean to what is now the Intracoastal Waterway–formerly Lake Worth. In 2018, Forbes estimated the value of the estate at around $160 million, claiming it had appreciated since Trump's purchase. Before making his way to Florida, Trump is reportedly set to hold a farewell ceremony at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

The primary business occupying the estate is the Mar-a-Lago Club, which opened in 1994 and operates as resort and hotel for dues-paying members, and rents out estate venues for private events. Operating the mansion as a club in this way, while continuing to live on the premises, allows Trump to significantly reduce his tax bill, by identifying a range of items used to maintain the mansion and his lifestyle as being legitimate business expenses. When President Trump was in residence as president, the Palm Beach region became a zone of temporary flight restrictions affecting flights and air operations severely within a 30 nautical mile (55.56 km) radius. Coast Guard and Secret Service secured the two waterway approaches, ocean and lake, and Secret Service cordoned off streets to Mar-a-Lago during the president's visits. The Coast Guard also attached an elite Maritime Safety and Security Team with unique capabilities that specialized in maritime security. By the third weekend in February 2017, nearby Palm Beach County Park Airport had been shut down for three consecutive weekends, accumulating significant financial losses for multiple businesses.
In November 2018, President Trump returned to Mar-a-Lago for Thanksgiving. One month later, President Trump canceled his planned Christmas vacation in Mar-a-Lago following the federal government shutdown. In November 2019, he returned to Mar-a-Lago for Thanksgiving, and a month later returned for Christmas. In November 2017, President Trump returned to Mar-a-Lago for a Thanksgiving celebration, and one month later he returned for his tenth presidential visit during his Christmas vacation. During Trump's presidency a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility was operational at Mar-a-Lago; it was removed after he left office. The SCIF was used for communications with the White House Situation Room and Pentagon.

The house was sold by billionaire Alex Meruelo and his wife, Liset Meruelo. Record producer Scott Storch also previously owned the house, from 2004 to 2008, property records show. But while new aerial photos show that outdoor hot tubs have been drained, a swimming pool’s water has turned to a putrid dark green — in contrast to the inviting, sparkling blue seen in previous listing photos. Steve Bannon, former advisor to President Donald Trump, addresses the media outside federal court in Washington, D.C., after being sentenced to four months in prison and a $6,500 fine for defying a congressional subpoena, on Friday, October 21, 2022.
These included documents clearly marked as classified, prompting the Department of Justice to restrict any details regarding the contents of the 15 boxes. In August 2022, the Pittsburg Post-Dispatch reported that a Ukrainian-born Russian speaker who used a fake name and claimed to be a Rothschild family heiress had frequented the residence over a year's time, even posing there for photos with Trump and Senator Lindsey Graham. As of January 2017, the club was nearly at its maximum capacity of 500 paying members and was admitting twenty to forty new members a year. The new club hosted concerts by Céline Dion and Billy Joel and had beauty pageant contestants as guests. Mar-a-Lago has frequently hosted the International Red Cross Ball, an annual "white tie, tails, and tiara" event. Founded by Post, it has a history of support of the mission of the American Red Cross.

The Mar-a-Lago Crowd, an informal group organized by President Trump which oversaw many of the activities of the Department of Veterans Affairs during the Trump administration, frequently met at the club. Palm Beach, described as Billionaire’s Row, has also been host to the likes of John F. Kennedy, who visited his own family’s property on the island during the winter months. Trump holds private quarters on the property in a separate, closed-off area. It has been labeled the second-largest mansion in the state of Florida.
Post spent US$7 million (equivalent to $109 million in 2021), and it was finished in 1927. The Mar-a-Lago club itself has hosted a long list of celebrities, including concerts by the likes of Celine Dion. Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley spent their honeymoon at the resort as well.
Ivana Trump received the mansion as part of the settlement in her 1991 divorce from Donald Trump. The penthouse, which was owned by Trump and where his daughter Ivanka and her family lived from 2011 until January 2017, was sold to Chinese-American businesswoman Angela Chen for 15.9 million dollars in February 2017. Trump originally planned to build a golf course on the property, but was opposed by the governments of the three municipalities the property lies within, and he wanted to avoid competing with his existing course nearby in Briarcliff Manor. He later explored renovating the two houses and redeveloping the rest of the property to build first 46 single-family houses, and in 2004, fifteen $25-million mansions. These plans were abandoned, and in 2015, Trump placed most of the property under a conservation easement.
Designed by architect Marion Sims Wyeth, the 11,000 square foot house has 58 bedrooms and 33 bathrooms. Bedford is about 45 miles north of New York City, and the Trump family seems to use the 50,000-square-foot house, built in 1919 by former Federal Reserve Chairman and Washington Post publisher Eugene Meyer , as a weekend and summer getaway. Trump reportedly, and perhaps unwittingly, allowed the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi to stay in a tent there during the United Nations General Assembly meeting in 2009 when no hotels would allow Gaddafi as a guest. He also has more friends down there, as opposed to, say, in Manhattan, where Trump—a lifelong New Yorker—is extremely unpopular.
In 2018, President Trump visited Mar-a-Lago eight times prior to the seasonal closing in May. During this time he had a summit meeting with Shinzō Abe on April 17–18. President Trump's fifth presidential visit took place on March 17–18. In a lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, it was revealed that Trump inflated the value of Mar-a-Lago to $739 million, when the property should actually be valued at $75 million. According to financial disclosure forms filed by Trump, the Mar-a-Lago Club had $29.7 million in gross revenues in the period June 2015 through May 2016.
They would ride ATVs, fish in Byram Lake, and help with construction work. Eric Trump described the property as a "home base" and Forbes called it a "family retreat". Throughout his presidency, he was often seen at the residence when he was not at The White House. However, the property was returned to the Post Foundation by an Act of Congress in 1981 due to its costly maintenance. The 62,500-square-foot property located in Palm Beach, Florida, was completed in 1927 and has roughly 126 rooms. As of 2022, "the crown jewel of Palm Beach is worth an estimated $350 million," according to the outlet.
